1. Smeg BCC02
This sleek, compact, and striking machine, created by Milan-based company Deep Design combines the brand's retro style with cutting edge technology. The machine can handle all the steps of the coffee-making procedure from grinding beans to making a puck, then making milk into a texturing, before dispensing the right amount.
The machine is also available in red, black or taupe. It is a great fit into any kitchen design. The machine does not come free of flaws, however. The majority of reviewers thought it was a bit expensive for a cup-to- bean maker (and isn't equipped with an ice cube).
But there were also numerous positive reviews about the quality of the coffee and the ease of using this machine. The digital display is intuitive and provides the step-by-step instructions and feedback throughout the making process, allowing you to improve your coffee every time. It will even alert you to alter the grind size if not quite right. It's almost like having a personal barista in your own home (minus Harry Potter's invisibility cloak and Elon Musk's rocket-building expertise).
This model is ideal for those who like milky drinks. The steam wand can be adjusted upwards and downwards to fit a variety of drinking vessels, with the exception of Viking drinking horns. We were impressed by the speed and effectiveness of the frothing process, too. It produces an excellent, full-flavoured, delicious espresso with a fantastic crema.
The BCC02 is a fantastic all-rounder. It's quiet and efficient, and it offers great value for money at the current price of PS499. The only issue is that it does not offer the same level customisation as other bean-to-cup machines that we have tested. It comes with a 15 bar pump, rather than the common 19 bar which isn't as effective for making high-quality espressos. This is a fantastic machine for those who like their coffee strong and dark.
